Downeast Maine gets its start in Washington County, the "Sunrise
County." We promise you a hearty welcome from friendly folks,
unsurpassed scenic splendor, quaint villages closely in touch with vivid
histories, and untouched natural areas.
There are so many attractions and things to do and see in Washington
County it is hard to list them all here.
Our
office is located in the beautiful, unspoiled Downeast Maine, Milbridge
that was once a busy shipbuilding center and what some have come to call the “last
frontier.” Experience a
Downeast cruise with a local captain while site
seeing the lighthouses, puffins, sunsets, and feast on lobsters in a
tranquil cove.
Take home something special from a local
gift shop. The Cinnamon Stick,
Firefly & friends, Narraguagus Pottery, Nelson Decoys, and Elmer’s
flower shop are just a few to mention. Take home colorfully painted
pottery, handmade blueberry soap, or a hand-knit sweater!
Visit the quaint town of Cherryfield, the
blueberry capital of the
world. There are over 12,000 acres of blueberries that blossom in June
and are harvested/raked in August. No Maine destination is as well known
or visited than Acadia National Park on Mt. Desert Island. The second
most visited national park in the United States; Acadia includes 35,000
acres with 41 miles of coastline. Whale watching, hiking, biking and
kayaking are all part of what make the Downeast/Acadia Region special.
Plan your trip in September & October, your route will be adorned with
colors mile after mile as nature takes its course and becomes a fabulous
fall feast for the eyes!
Don’t forget to check out our delicious
restaurants and prepare your
palate for a feast. Enjoy dining in or dining out and setting up a spot
right next to the ocean to enjoy your meal from the sea.
How about an intimate get away to a cozy ocean front
cottage or stay at
a local charming Inn/B&B on the Narraguagus River.
Enjoy spending your time outdoors? With many parks and wildlife refuges
in the region there are plenty of trails and wildlife to occupy even the
most avid outdoorsman. Whether you are seeking hiking trails, bird
watching, wildlife watching, or something more adventuresome, Downeast
has it all.
Investigate
the rich heritage of fishing, logging, and “bluberrying” in DownEast’s
many little towns such as Milbridge, Cherryfield, Jonesport, Steuben and
more. Some say you are not truly DownEast until you reach Washington
County, but judge for yourself where DownEast begins.
